Influenza, or the flu, is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by influenza viruses and affects all populations. Due to the virus’s propensity for rapid mutation and efficient transmission, it gives rise to seasonal epidemics each year. Currently, three classes of anti-influenza drugs have been approved for marketing in China: neuraminidase inhibitors, hemagglutinin inhibitors, and M2 ion channel blockers. Arbidol, recently included in the new influenza diagnosis and treatment guidelines, belongs to the class of hemagglutinin inhibitors. It effectively blocks viral fusion with host cells, while also inducing the body to produce endogenous interferon, thereby inhibiting viral replication, enhancing immune function, boosting macrophage phagocytic activity, and promoting natural killer cell activation. Arbidol exhibits antiviral activity against all influenza virus subtypes (A, B, and C), with particularly potent activity against influenza A viruses, including H1N1, H2N2, and H3N3. It has a favorable safety profile, with only mild adverse reactions, and no drug-resistant strains have been reported to date. Following years of clinical validation, arbidol has now become an essential medication for influenza prevention and control in Russia and is also designated as a strategic reserve drug for the military.
Arbidol has earned widespread recognition in the medical community; even before its inclusion in the latest influenza diagnosis and treatment guidelines, it was already listed in the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Influenza A (H1N1) (2010)” issued by the former Ministry of Health. Moreover, both the Respiratory Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Pediatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, in their jointly published “Chinese Expert Consensus on the Antiviral Treatment and Prophylactic Use of Anti-Influenza Drugs (2016),” as well as the Respiratory Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association in its 2016 “Expert Consensus on the Rational Use of Anti-Influenza Viral Agents for the Treatment of Influenza,” have also recommended Arbidol as a commonly used antiviral agent for influenza.
Meanwhile, Arbidol is also recommended in the “Interpretation of Clinical Pathways (2018 Edition)—Respiratory Diseases Volume: Interpretation of the Clinical Pathway for Community-Acquired Pneumonia.” In addition, it is included in the “Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (2019 Edition).” This August, Arbidol was added to the 2019 National Medical Insurance Catalog as a Class B drug, with restricted use for antiviral treatment of severe influenza in high-risk populations and critically ill patients.
