On the afternoon of February 19, the General Office of the National Health Commission and the Office of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly issued the “Notice on the Issuance of the Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 6).” This updated protocol adds chloroquine phosphate and arbidol as antiviral treatments. As soon as the news broke, call centers across the country were inundated with inquiries about additional supplies of arbidol hydrochloride capsules manufactured by Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Currently, Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical is ramping up production to ensure a stable supply.
Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the oral dosage-form workshop at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has been operating at full capacity on its abidor hydrochloride capsule production line. “At present, regions across the country are continuously increasing their procurement orders for abidor hydrochloride capsules. To meet this demand, we have maintained round-the-clock production with all staff working without days off, producing nearly 1 million capsules per day—almost double our usual output—in an effort to ensure adequate supply for clinical use and the market,” said Han Shuqin, the company’s deputy general manager in charge of manufacturing, on February 19.
According to available information, from January 25 to February 18, Shisi Pharmaceutical has cumulatively shipped 1.5 million capsules of the antiviral drug arbidol hydrochloride to Hubei Province, including 1.1 million capsules destined for Wuhan.
Shi Si Yao is one of the earliest pharmaceutical companies in China to develop the drug arbidol. According to Dr. Sun Lijie, Director of the Shi Si Yao Pharmaceutical Research Institute, arbidol is primarily used to treat upper respiratory tract infections caused by influenza A and B viruses, among others. In 2019, it was first included in the National Medical Insurance Catalogue and has since been repeatedly listed as a clinically recommended antiviral agent for influenza in the guidelines issued by the National Health Commission.
Sun Lijie stated that the inclusion of arbidol in the Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 6) has further strengthened our resolve to accelerate further research on this drug, thereby enabling it to better realize its clinical value.
