“Thin, tall, and a man of few words, he’s known for tackling even the most stubborn machine problems head-on”—that’s how employees at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. describe He Yazhuo. Within the company, He is a well-known figure: he has delivered numerous breakthroughs, won many awards, and generated substantial economic benefits; yet he is also an extraordinary individual who can effortlessly overcome the “culture shock” that often plagues imported equipment.

Immediately after graduating from university, He Yazhuo was assigned to the filling workshop of No. 4 Pharmaceutical Factory and began working as an operator.

At the time, the workshop where He Yazhuo worked was equipped exclusively with imported machinery. Because the specifications of the formulations being produced varied, the soft-bag production lines had to be changed frequently. A seasoned veteran could complete a line change in just one hour, whereas He Yazhuo needed three hours.

A small incident taught He Yazhuo the importance of learning through hands-on experience. Consequently, in his spare time, he proactively sought to learn from seasoned mentors, diligently participated in technical training programs, and seized every opportunity to enhance his skills.

During those years, He Yazhuo spent every moment except for eating and sleeping in the workshop, constantly working around the equipment. What’s more, he was always eager to lend a hand—after finishing his own tasks, he would invariably step over to help others. Some people would say, “You don’t need to worry about this; it’s not your job.” But he believed: “The more you do, the more you learn, and the broader your thinking becomes!”

Sure enough, He Yazhuo, a thoughtful and analytical employee, came up with an idea that has since won widespread acclaim: “Continuous Membrane Replacement in the Formulation Filling Workshop.” Previously, each time the equipment in the formulation filling workshop required a membrane change, the line had to be shut down, delaying production. How could this be done more quickly? Led by He Yazhuo, the workshop’s core team conducted repeated studies and ultimately developed a method for performing membrane replacements without stopping the production line.

It was only later that He Yazhuo learned that this technology is state-of-the-art nationwide, earning high praise even from German equipment experts.

Once He Yazhuo embarked on the path of innovation, he could no longer stop. From that moment on, he sought to modify every piece of equipment, striving to make it even more perfect. Since most of the machinery in the factory was imported from abroad, mastering equipment from multiple countries became his ultimate goal.

In 2009, He Yazhuo noticed that the equipment required monthly replacement of its heating elements, each costing RMB 12,000—a significant expense. “How could we extend the service life of these heating elements?” After extensive research and numerous trials, He ultimately discovered that the frequent replacements were due to adhesion caused by high temperatures; by installing an additional device at the points of adhesion, the problem could be resolved. Following the implementation of this technology, the service life of the heating elements was extended to six months.

The pharmaceutical manufacturing workshop requires regular fumigation with toxic gases for disinfection, and ensuring the safety of operators presents a significant challenge. He Yazhuo took on this problem.

He Yazhuo discovered that mastering reaction time is the key to solving the problem. Together with his team, he designed a formaldehyde disinfection generator that addresses the shortcomings of previous methods and maximizes operator safety; this achievement has also been successfully granted a national invention patent.

“It’s not good if just one person does well; it’s only truly good when everyone does well!” He Yazhuo has always held fast to this belief. In 2016, the “He Yazhuo Employee Innovation Studio,” led by He Yazhuo, was established.

The “He Yazhuo Innovation Studio” places no restrictions on position, educational background, or seniority; all members participate on an equal footing and engage in open, free-form discussions. Over the past few years, the studio has become a veritable “Whampoa Military Academy” for Sino-Pharm in cultivating technical talent. Today, many of He’s “disciples” have risen to become key personnel and technical experts in their respective roles. At Sino-Pharm, being selected to join the studio is considered a great honor and a mark of distinction.

When it comes to his colleagues, He Yazhuo never holds back; he keeps his years of meticulously maintained work logs right in the workshop, readily available for everyone to consult. From individual innovators to building a “talent pipeline,” from small-scale inventions to developing distinctive strengths, and from solving tough problems to driving overall progress, he shares his experience and expertise without reservation. “Even if I were made of iron, how many nails could I possibly hammer in? Only when more people master these skills can we cultivate true master craftsmen!” He Yazhuo says.

In 2019 alone, the studio accomplished 186 technological innovations, which, upon widespread application, generated economic benefits totaling over RMB 10 million. The studio has since been awarded a series of prestigious honors, including the Shijiazhuang City Innovation Studio, the Shijiazhuang City Workers’ Pioneer Title, and the Hebei Province Innovation Studio.

“There are no shortcuts on the path of innovation; only by enduring solitude and dedicating oneself to diligent research can one achieve success.” As the leader of the innovation team, He Yazhuo is confident that he will continue to guide his team in scaling new heights.
