Have you heard of “nano-bullets”? They are drug particles developed using nanotechnology, capable of precisely targeting and effectively neutralizing bacteria and viruses.
Recently, Li Lei, head of the Formulation Research and Development Center at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical, has been working around the clock to develop “nanobullets.” Not long ago, his team successfully developed a new drug for treating liver fibrosis; however, they encountered a significant challenge: the drug exhibits very low solubility. This means that the human body absorbs it poorly, making it difficult for the drug to exert its intended therapeutic effect.
To overcome this challenging problem, Li Lei and his team tried dozens of formulation methods. Ultimately, they adopted nanotechnology to crush the drug into nanoparticles using a specialized device, achieving a breakthrough. Typically, drug particles can be as small as 10 micrometers, whereas these nano-sized particles average only 100 nanometers. Since 1 micrometer equals 1,000 nanometers, comparing the two is like comparing a soccer ball to a locomotive.
Simply reducing the size of the drug particles is not enough; they tend to clump together, resulting in poor dispersibility. To address this, researchers developed a special coating material that encapsulates the drug particles. This coating not only prevents agglomeration but also enhances the particles’ ability to specifically adhere to the surfaces of target bacteria and viruses. These pathogens act as the coating’s “targets”—once encountered, the particles swiftly home in, penetrate biological barriers, and deliver precise eradication.
Isn’t it remarkable? That’s why this new drug has been designated as a Class 1 National Drug. What exactly is a Class 1 drug? It refers to an original, innovative medication that has never been developed anywhere in the world—neither domestically nor internationally. Although the research and development of such drugs require substantial investment, pose significant technical challenges, and span a lengthy development cycle, thanks to the province’s policy support for strategic emerging industries, Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical is simultaneously pursuing the R&D of five Class 1 drugs.
In fact, many pharmaceutical companies in our province are stepping up their efforts to develop innovative and rare-disease drugs. According to a report by Hebei News Broadcast, in the first three quarters of this year, the value added of strategic emerging industries among large-scale industrial enterprises across the province increased by 6.6% year on year, and even more positive news is yet to come.
