During the expo, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical showcased the application of smart workshops in its operations through VR technology.
In front of the VR display screen at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical’s smart factory, numerous curious visitors donned VR headsets and were transported into an immersive experience of the nation’s most advanced intelligent intravenous infusion production line. “All it takes is a single command—just a tap of a button—and the entire powder-conveying system springs to life. The rest is handled automatically by the system! Smart technology has truly revolutionized our production processes,” praised Mr. Ren, a Shijiazhuang resident with a degree in mechanical engineering. “The powder-conveying system is the ‘heart’ of the workshop, responsible for batching pharmaceutical solutions of different specifications and formulations—and this process, too, can be completed with a single click. With just one instruction, the system does the rest on its own.” According to staff from Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical, the weighing and batching operations in the three raw-material storage warehouses are controlled by an Italian DEC system, fully enclosed and automated. Operators simply follow the pre-designed formulation and click the mouse to initiate the process. In the past, this procedure relied entirely on manual weighing, dosing, and mixing, which was not only physically demanding but also posed a high risk of contaminating the products.
“I saw huge warehouses where boxes of pharmaceuticals are automatically conveyed along conveyor belts, automatically scanned and palletized, and then transported to automated storage racks by driverless rail-guided vehicles. Sihua Pharmaceutical’s level of智能化 has completely reshaped my understanding of what a warehouse can be!” said a local resident.
In the pharmaceutical industry, the widespread adoption of highly automated and intelligent equipment has revealed that its advantages extend far beyond cost reduction; it also delivers significant improvements in manufacturing processes, reduces quality risks in drug products, and enhances overall product safety. Recognizing this, Shisi Pharmaceutical has invested a total of RMB 3 billion in implementing eight major technological upgrading projects. By benchmarking against world-class standards, the company has introduced a host of state-of-the-art, cutting-edge technologies, including fully automated powder conveying systems, thermal-pressure distillation water generators, one-step bottle-making machines, and automatic lamp inspection systems, thereby further elevating the level of automation and intelligence across its production facilities.
In the past, the visual inspection station in the Shisi Pharmaceutical workshop was the most labor-intensive position, with every product inspected manually to determine pass or fail. Today, manual inspection has been replaced by automated visual inspection machines, boosting production capacity while significantly reducing manpower requirements. Under the control of these automated systems, each bottle undergoes 150 image captures during the inspection process, and proprietary software analyzes the images to automatically identify defects, diverting nonconforming products onto designated rejection lanes. Since the introduction of these visual inspection machines, the qualified rate for related products has reached 99.99%.
“The defining feature of Sihua Pharmaceutical is the integration of intelligent technologies into every stage of the production process. By seamlessly integrating robots, automated production lines, automated warehouses, and information systems, we have achieved automation, intelligence, and end-to-end integration across drug manufacturing, storage, and distribution. This minimizes human intervention, significantly reduces the rate of product contamination and damage, alleviates operational intensity, ensures pharmaceutical quality, and enhances both production efficiency and accuracy,” said Han Shuqin, Deputy General Manager of Sihua Pharmaceutical.
According to reports, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has taken the lead in implementing a fully automated logistics center integrated with its production lines, achieving fully automated inbound and outbound operations and thereby simplifying and accelerating inventory counts, report generation, and query functions.
