In recent days, the outbreak of novel coronavirus–associated pneumonia in Wuhan has been a constant source of concern for employees of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical. “We have been closely monitoring developments in the epidemic and doing everything possible to overcome challenges such as shortages of manpower and transportation capacity ahead of the holiday. All workshops and departments are working at full capacity to prioritize the production, inspection, allocation, and shipment of antiviral drug Arbidol capsules and disinfectants, ensuring that clinical drug needs in key regions are met and contributing our part to winning this war fought without gunfire,” said Su Xuejun, Chairman of the company.

On the morning of January 22, as biting cold winds swept through the area, we entered Workshop 102 in Shijiazhuang High-tech Industrial Development Zone. Despite the approaching Spring Festival, the production line for Arbidol capsules—a drug used to combat influenza viruses—was bustling with activity. “We promptly reallocated staff and have remained on high alert at all times,” said Han Shuqin, the company’s deputy general manager. “All production lines are operating at full capacity, running three shifts a day, to ensure a steady supply of Arbidol capsules to the market. Currently, daily output has reached 900,000 capsules.”

“General Secretary Xi Jinping has issued important instructions on doing a good job in epidemic prevention and control, providing clear guidance for our work,” said Su Xuejun. “We will ensure that our thinking and actions are fully aligned with General Secretary Xi’s important instructions and with the arrangements and requirements of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, putting the safety and health of the people first, and making all-out efforts to ensure smooth pharmaceutical production to provide solid support for epidemic prevention and control.”

The company’s R&D personnel and production and operations departments attach great importance to developments in the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, promptly monitor clinical and market demand, and actively coordinate to meet clinical drug requirements.

“Arbidol capsules are one of the company’s earliest domestically developed antiviral drugs for influenza,” said Dr. Sun Lijie, Director of the Company’s Pharmaceutical Research Institute. Arbidol was originally developed in Russia, and studies have demonstrated that, in addition to its activity against influenza viruses, it also exhibits clinical efficacy against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus. In November 2019, it was once again included by the National Health Commission in the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Influenza (2019 Edition)” as an antiviral drug recommended for clinical use. “Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan, fever clinics at relevant hospitals in Wuhan have designated Arbidol as one of the medications currently used in clinical management.”

The evolving pandemic has not only led to a rapid surge in demand for antiviral medications but has also caused a substantial increase in the supply and demand for disinfectant products. At the disinfectant production facility, workers are stepping up efforts to formulate a new-generation hand sanitizer to meet market needs. Han Shuqin explained, “Over the past few days, our disinfectant products have virtually sold out on Tmall and JD.com online, and offline sales since the start of the New Year have exceeded 20,000 barrels. As a result, the workshop has had to mobilize additional staff to ramp up production and replenish inventory before the holiday.”

In front of the towering, state-of-the-art automated logistics warehouse, emergency-requisitioned freight vehicles are fully loaded and ready to depart. “At present, customers in Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Liaoning, and other regions are urgently awaiting deliveries. Organizing transport capacity before the holiday has indeed presented considerable challenges, with both transportation and labor costs soaring. Nevertheless, meeting the public’s health needs must remain our top priority,” said Manager Li Ligong, who is responsible for warehouse management. He added that since January of this year, the outbound volume of Arbidol capsules has increased by 513% compared with the previous month.

Faced with a sudden surge in market demand, Chairman Su Xuejun stated: “The more critical the moment, the more pharmaceutical companies must not only ensure product quality but also uphold their social commitment and responsibility—under no circumstances should they seek profits at the expense of ethical integrity.”
