From the biting winds and snow of winter to the gentle warmth of spring; from the heart-wrenching shock of the initial outbreak to the steadfast resilience that followed; from city lockdowns and quarantine measures to the selfless, life-or-death rescue efforts undertaken at any cost—throughout this battle against the epidemic, we have endured much, lost much, and harbored an immeasurable array of emotions. To honor our departed compatriots in the name of the nation—such a day and such a ritual today will surely ensure that the deceased are remembered with immortal fame and that the living are sustained by enduring love, bringing solace to every heart.

“When a nation prospers, it treats its people with utmost care and compassion.” As the Five-Star Red Flag is slowly lowered, the dignity of life rises ever higher. Among the martyrs who sacrificed their lives and the fellow countrymen who passed away in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic were medical workers, public security officers, community workers, and ordinary citizens—people whom we may have never met, whose pasts we may know little about, and even whose names we may not know. Yet the tide that flows through our very veins is the same as theirs: from the moment we are born, we bear a single, shared name—Chinese. Today’s solemnly lowered national flag serves as a vibrant red bond that unites us all, affirming both the dignity of those who have fallen and our own collective dignity; it underscores the nation’s profound reverence for life and reflects our Party’s governing philosophy of placing the people at the highest place in its heart.

The departed are gone forever, but the living still have the chance to move forward. Though this ruthless virus has claimed the lives of so many of our fellow countrymen and women, it cannot extinguish our will or our convictions. In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, what we have shown the world is not lamentation, but resilience. We will never forget the faces of our white-clad angels, etched with the marks left by masks and protective gear; we will never forget the lights that burned through the night at Leishenshan and Huoshenshan Hospitals; and we will never forget the heartfelt cries of “Go China! Go Wuhan!” echoing across the land. Even in the midst of profound sorrow, an inexhaustible source of strength has been rising around us. Raising the national flag at half-mast in memory of those who have passed serves as a powerful reminder of our unwavering determination to vanquish the epidemic once and for all, and as a rallying call to accelerate the restoration of normal production and daily life. At present, the epidemic situation continues to improve, yet the risks of resurgence and imported cases must not be overlooked, and there remains much work to be done to resume work and production. The best tribute we can pay to the departed is to cherish every moment of life even more, to perform our duties to the best of our ability, to make up for lost time, and to get our production and daily life back on track as soon as possible.

“The Chinese nation has endured countless trials throughout its history, yet it has never been crushed; rather, it has grown stronger with every setback, continuously maturing and rising anew from adversity.” By burying our tears deep within our hearts and transforming our grief into strength, by uniting as one and forging an unshakable resolve, by striving with determination and forging ahead with courage and fortitude, we will surely overcome all difficulties and obstacles and usher in a brighter future!
