Large-volume injectables are commonly referred to as “large infusions.” The quality and safety of large-infusion products are directly linked to medication safety.
On August 25, a reporter visited Workshop 208 at Shisi Pharmaceutical, touring the entire production process—from the preparation of infusion-grade water to the automated logistics and distribution system—and gaining a profound appreciation for the transformative power of digital technologies in boosting production efficiency and enhancing product quality.
Improving quality, safety, and efficiency is inseparable from investment. In recent years, Shisi Pharmaceutical has invested a total of RMB 3 billion in implementing eight major technological upgrading projects and introducing advanced automated equipment, including fully automatic powder conveying systems, thermal-pressure distillation water machines, one-step bottle-making machines, and automatic lamp inspection machines, thereby significantly enhancing the level of automation and intelligence in its large-volume parenteral solution production workshops.
Shisi Pharmaceutical operates a fully automated logistics distribution center seamlessly integrated with its production lines, achieving fully automated inbound and outbound operations. Within this automated facility—comprising towering racking systems and autonomous stacker cranes—6,000 square meters of space handles the turnover of over 20 million bottles of large-volume parenteral solutions, all managed by just seven employees working three shifts.
Digital technologies are also being fully leveraged in product quality traceability. According to Liu Miao, Shisi Pharmaceutical has implemented an intelligent information management system that ensures product quality is both traceable and auditable: the origin of raw materials for each bottle of large-volume infusion, the personnel responsible for each production step, and the inspectors involved can all be clearly identified within the system. “This means that every bottle of product currently on the market can be precisely traced back to the specific date it was manufactured, the particular production line it came from, and the exact order under which it was produced.”
