On the evening of December 8, the R&F Wanda Convention Center in Guangzhou was aglow with dazzling lights and buzzing with a vibrant atmosphere as the award ceremony for the “13th Five-Year Plan” China Pharmaceutical Industry Achievements Showcase was held here, co-organized by the Pharmaceutical Economic Daily and the Organizing Committee of the 2020 National Pharmaceutical Economic Information Conference and the Mifang Annual Meeting. Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical’s innovatively developed and manufactured AINODA® Arbidol Hydrochloride Capsules were recognized at the event as a landmark achievement in China’s pharmaceutical science and technology during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, owing to their outstanding performance in both the market and clinical settings.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China’s pharmaceutical economy experienced robust growth, with continuously strengthening scientific and technological capabilities and steadily improving independent innovation capacity, yielding research achievements that have garnered worldwide attention. To mark the concluding year of the 13th Five-Year Plan, the Pharmaceutical Economy Newspaper, together with the Organizing Committee of the 2020 National Pharmaceutical Economic Information Conference and the Annual Meeting of the Mifang Association, solemnly launched the “13th Five-Year Plan” China Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Landmark Achievements Initiative. The initiative aims to summarize the scientific and technological achievements of China’s pharmaceutical industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, facilitate the commercialization of these innovations, and help propel China’s transformation from a major pharmaceutical producer into a global leader in pharmaceuticals. The selection process was conducted by industry experts who comprehensively evaluated flagship products and brands that demonstrated outstanding performance across multiple dimensions during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, including technological innovation, clinical efficacy, market share, and industry influence.
Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical is one of the earliest domestic pharmaceutical companies to develop arbidol. Arbidol is an antiviral agent primarily indicated for upper respiratory tract infections caused by influenza A and B viruses, among others, and exhibits broad-spectrum antiviral activity. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, thereby blocking the initial step of viral entry. In addition, arbidol can induce the body to produce endogenous interferon, which not only suppresses viral replication but also modulates and enhances immune function, conferring multiple mechanisms that synergistically combat viral infection. As early as 2010, arbidol was included in the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Influenza A (H1N1)” issued by the former Ministry of Health. Furthermore, the Respiratory Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Association jointly published the “Chinese Expert Consensus on the Antiviral Treatment and Prophylactic Use of Influenza” in 2016, and the Respiratory Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association released the “Expert Consensus on the Rational Use of Anti-Influenza Viral Agents for the Treatment of Influenza” in 2016; both documents recommended arbidol as a commonly used antiviral agent for influenza. In 2019, the product was added to the 2019 National Basic Medical Insurance Catalogue (Category B) and to the list of clinically recommended antiviral agents for influenza issued by the National Health Commission. On November 5, 2020, it was once again included in the “Influenza Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol (2020 Edition)” issued by the National Health Commission. During the COVID-19 pandemic, arbidol was listed by the National Health Commission as a recommended drug in the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Pneumonia Caused by Novel Coronavirus Infection (Versions 6, 7, and 8),” and many provinces and cities across China incorporated it into their stockpiles of medications for COVID-19 prevention and control.
Since its launch, AINODA® Arbidol Hydrochloride Capsules manufactured by Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical have been highly favored by the market and are now distributed both domestically and internationally. Earlier this year, Shijiazhuang No.4 Pharmaceutical promptly dispatched and donated antibacterial and antiviral medications—including Arbidol Hydrochloride Capsules and Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride Sodium Chloride Injection—to Wuhan in Hubei Province, the Shennongjia Forestry District, and other regions, playing a positive role in the epidemic prevention and control efforts. The company was subsequently commended in letters of appreciation from the Medical Supplies Guarantee Group of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism under the State Council for Responding to the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia Epidemic, as well as from the relevant local Party committees and governments.
