This installment spotlights Xia Guolong, recipient of the Hebei May 1 Labor Medal and Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Xinhua Net: The research and development of pharmaceuticals embodies a commendable spirit of craftsmanship. Compared with other industrial products, what are the distinctive features of pharmaceutical R&D?

Xia Guolong: What is even more needed is a scientific spirit of unwavering dedication, relentless pursuit of excellence, and meticulous attention to detail.

Medicines are directly related to people’s lives and safety; therefore, those engaged in pharmaceutical research and development must shoulder an even greater sense of responsibility. To ensure the safety of medicines, every step—from laboratory pharmacological research and animal pharmacological safety assessments to human clinical trials—must be executed with absolute precision, leaving no room for the slightest error. To make effective medicines more palatable, researchers personally taste formulations during flavor evaluation studies, enabling them to fine-tune prescriptions accordingly. Behind every medicine lies the silent, dedicated, and meticulous effort of countless scientists who pursue excellence with unwavering focus and relentless refinement—efforts born of tireless study, thoughtful reflection, and diligent action, and embodying the pioneering spirit of “trailblazing oxen” that drives innovation, tackles tough challenges, and breaks new ground.

Xinhua Net: Drug safety is directly linked to the lives and health of the general public. What safeguards have the drugs developed by you and your team provided?

Xia Guolong: Meeting the Demand for High-Quality Medicines and Alleviating the Financial Burden of Medication on the Public

In recent years, we have actively carried out the national evaluation of the quality and therapeutic equivalence of generic drugs. Through re-evaluation and upgrading of quality standards, the quality of many generic products has now reached a level comparable to that of originator imported drugs. To date, 30 dosage forms across 22 drug varieties have passed the bioequivalence assessment, with four specific dosage forms—including ciprofloxacin lactate sodium chloride injection—being among the first in the industry to do so. Armed with this “pass” of bioequivalence assessment, we have actively participated in government-led centralized drug procurement, replacing expensive foreign-originated medications with more affordable generics. This not only meets the public’s demand for high-quality medicines but also effectively reduces the financial burden of medication on patients.

Xinhua Net: You have led a young team to achieve remarkable results. What insights can you share on how to help young researchers feel secure in their work and focus on research?

Xia Guolong: Providing a platform for young people to showcase their talents and inspiring them to bravely take on major responsibilities.

I believe that the first priority is to foster a robust ecosystem for talent and innovation among young R&D professionals, providing them with a platform to showcase their capabilities. For instance, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has successively established high-end R&D and innovation platforms such as the National Enterprise Technology Center and the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory, and has also partnered with universities like China Pharmaceutical University to set up research and innovation centers. These initiatives not only bolster the company’s R&D and innovation efforts but also create a conducive environment for the growth and development of young R&D professionals.

Secondly, we must inspire and motivate them through meaningful work. By establishing a robust talent incentive system, we can foster a strong sense of responsibility among young R&D personnel, encouraging them to take on challenging assignments. By setting exemplary role models who are willing to dedicate themselves and overcome formidable obstacles, we can instill in them the resolve to face difficulties head-on, live up to the mission of our times, and make the most of their prime years.

Finally, it is essential to provide young talent with favorable working and living conditions, including an excellent research environment, high-quality office facilities, and competitive compensation packages, so that they can devote themselves wholeheartedly to research and innovation without any distractions.
