Dear General Manager Liu, it seems that, in the eyes of ordinary people, every pharmaceutical company has a distinct “chemical” odor. Yet when you step into our Fourth Pharmaceutical Factory, the experience is entirely different. As far as the eye can see, the entire site is awash with greenery; not only is there no unpleasant smell, but you can even catch a faint floral fragrance—hardly what one would associate with a large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. So, what specific efforts have we made to build a “garden-style factory”?

Protecting the ecological environment and making rational use of social and natural resources are matters of paramount importance that benefit the nation and its people, bringing lasting prosperity to future generations. They also serve as the clean source and inexhaustible driving force behind Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical’s unwavering commitment to its original mission and harmonious development. As a pioneer in the industry, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has championed the “green pharmaceutical” development philosophy, integrating environmental protection and resource conservation into every aspect of its daily operations.

Water and land are both precious, non-renewable resources. As a major water user, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical continuously undertakes process upgrades and enhances the comprehensive utilization of water resources to conserve this vital resource. We collect reclaimed water generated during production—such as from bottle washing, stopper cleaning, and steam condensate—and, after treatment, reuse it for watering plants and trees, fish farming, fountain operations, showering, and make-up water for recirculating cooling systems, achieving a water utilization rate of 90%.

Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical has taken the intensive use of land to the extreme. Through scientific planning and rational layout, it has maximized both economic and social benefits from its limited land resources. In practical implementation, the company emphasizes a “top-down” approach, making full use of both above-ground and underground space. To this end, it has successively built what was once the largest, earliest, and most highly automated three-dimensional logistics center in North China—boasting internationally advanced standards. The towering structure right beside me is precisely such a facility: 24 meters high, 95 meters wide, and 150 meters long, with over 40,000 storage positions. Its inventory capacity is equivalent to seven times that of a conventional flat-floor warehouse, significantly reducing land consumption. Currently, the company operates seven three-dimensional logistics centers of comparable scale. Its innovative approach to land conservation has also earned high praise from the relevant authorities.

Now that we’ve discussed water and land, let’s turn to the production process. As you mentioned earlier, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical integrates the concept of green manufacturing into every single step of its production operations. Could you please provide some specific details?

Our production processes are equally “green” through and through. In particular, with the development of smart factories, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has achieved more precise, efficient, and secure production process management, significantly boosting productivity, enhancing product quality, and reducing energy consumption and overall costs.

In the past, the visual inspection station in the production workshops of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical was the position with the highest labor demand, as every product had to be visually inspected for quality. Today, manual inspection has been replaced by automated visual inspection machines, boosting production line capacity while significantly reducing manpower requirements. Under the control of these automated systems, each bottle is automatically captured in 150 images, which are then analyzed by software to automatically identify defects. Defective products are subsequently routed to designated sorting lanes, effectively eliminating missed defects caused by human error, enhancing product quality, and substantially reducing workers’ physical workload.

Through energy conservation and emission reduction, technological upgrading, and the adoption of new materials, technologies, and processes, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has achieved green and sustainable development and was successfully selected as one of the first batch of Green Factories by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

What we just discussed—the “garden-style factory”—is the visible aspect. However, the more significant dimension of building a “green factory” lies in the invisible elements, such as the adoption of low-carbon technologies, the development of green growth hubs, and the transformation and upgrading of enterprises. In this regard, what specific measures have we taken, and what results have we achieved?

The ecological environment and corporate development reinforce each other; achieving green, sustainable development hinges on technological innovation.

Leveraging innovation, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical continuously increases its investment in the R&D and manufacturing of green products, while consistently enhancing the quality of its products and services. By adopting new technologies and processes, the company is accelerating efforts to conserve energy and reduce resource consumption. In terms of equipment procurement and upgrades, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has always adhered to the principle of “innovation first, automation first, energy conservation first,” actively promoting the use of advanced technologies to transform traditional industries. For instance, by introducing high-pressure negative-ion cleaning technology for plastic infusion bottles, the company has achieved waterless cleaning; moreover, major high-power electrical equipment in its production facilities—such as bottle-making machines, refrigeration units, and air compressors—have undergone technical upgrades including variable-frequency drives, resulting in an average energy-saving rate of 28%.

Moreover, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has significantly increased its investment by establishing a state-of-the-art Energy Management Center and implementing an advanced power and energy monitoring system. This system enables real-time, end-to-end monitoring of steam, electrical systems, circulating water, waste heat recovery systems, and other critical infrastructure, providing instant visibility into energy supply and consumption as well as equipment operating conditions. According to incomplete statistics, in recent years Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has invested more than RMB 200 million in environmental protection facilities, wastewater treatment systems, noise control measures, and solid-waste disposal sites. Through continuous technological upgrades and the introduction of new technologies and equipment, the company has achieved “zero emissions” of environmental pollutants, successfully transforming itself from a major energy consumer into a leading energy-efficiency performer.

“Ecology is like water, and development is like a boat.” Looking ahead, Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical will proactively serve as a model and leader, spearheading the green transformation of related industries—aligning with the overarching principles of comprehensively promoting green manufacturing and accelerating the implementation of green manufacturing initiatives—and ultimately achieving a green development model characterized by compact plant layouts, non-hazardous raw materials, clean production processes, resource recovery from waste, and low-carbon energy use.
