April is a season of vibrant blossoms and gentle spring breezes. On the morning of April 22, the auditorium of the Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Group’s R&D Center was filled with an atmosphere of warmth and solemnity as the Group’s R&D Center held its 2023 First-Quarter Work Summary and Commendation Conference. Leaders of the Group—Qu Jiguang, Su Xuejun, Wu Hengyao, Shi Jianhui, Sun Lijie, Tian Pengmei, and others—joined representatives of the Group’s R&D personnel to review the phased R&D and innovation achievements so far this year, analyze industry trends from a broader perspective, set higher standards for prioritizing future research efforts, and further advance the Group’s high-quality development to a new level and achieve new breakthroughs. The conference was chaired by Wang Lijiang, Executive Deputy General Manager of the Group’s R&D Center.

At the meeting, heads of the API Research Institute, Liquid Formulation Research Institute, Solid Dosage Form Research Institute, and Innovation Department of the R&D Center presented reports on the progress of their work in the first quarter of this year and on the key priorities for the second quarter. Qu Jiguang, Su Xuejun, Wu Hengyao, and other leaders provided comments on the priority research projects and put forward suggestions for improvement.

The conference announced the list of outstanding employees and exemplary departments of the R&D Center for the first quarter. The honored representatives, full of energy, took to the stage and received certificates or trophies from Group leaders Qu Jiguang and Su Xuejun, prompting enthusiastic applause from the entire audience in celebration.

Sun Lijie, Group Executive President and General Manager of the R&D Center, provided a comprehensive summary of the new achievements made by the Group in R&D and innovation during the first quarter of this year, objectively analyzed the challenges and opportunities ahead, and put forward specific improvement measures and requirements for the next phase, including accelerating the quality and pace of R&D projects, strengthening talent development and recruitment, and refining the performance appraisal mechanism.

Qu Jiguang, Chairman of the Board, extended his congratulations to the outstanding individuals and teams honored, and expressed his sincere respect and heartfelt gratitude to all research personnel who have worked tirelessly and made significant contributions to advancing the Group’s drive for innovative, high-quality development. He noted that, since the beginning of this year, all research staff have demonstrated unwavering dedication and a strong work ethic, embodying the spirit of labor, the model worker ethos, and a spirit of selfless service, while focusing on breaking through critical bottlenecks and achieving remarkable R&D results. To date, a total of 39 projects have been submitted, including four active pharmaceutical ingredients, ten solid dosage forms, and 27 liquid dosage forms, with 21 new products ultimately receiving approval. This growing portfolio of innovative achievements provides robust support and assurance for the Company’s participation in market competition, while also serving as a more solid foundation and a powerful engine for its high-quality development.

Qu Jiguang pointed out that R&D innovation has always been the fundamental driving force behind the iterative upgrading of enterprises. It is the shared responsibility and mission of all R&D personnel to strengthen their confidence in development, seize opportunities, work diligently, steadfastly focus on doing their own jobs well, and accelerate their entry into the leading ranks of domestic pharmaceutical R&D innovation. He emphasized the need to firmly uphold confidence in development, continue to unswervingly implement the R&D strategy of “combining generic and innovative development, highlighting distinctive features, and focusing on key areas,” and achieve more, better, and faster breakthroughs in priority areas; to elevate the level of innovation, consolidate innovative capabilities, and accelerate the shift in the pace of scientific research and innovation from “catching up” to “running alongside” and ultimately “taking the lead”; to thoroughly summarize experience, pool resources, remain problem-oriented, and continue to coordinate and effectively tackle key challenges related to first-generic drugs, innovative drugs, high-end complex formulations, and critical core technologies that represent “chokepoint” bottlenecks, thereby further enhancing R&D productivity; and to foster a sense of self-reliance and strength in scientific research, continuously promote in-depth industry–university–research collaboration, and actively cultivate more leading talents and innovative teams capable of undertaking urgent and difficult R&D tasks.

Young people in the new era are at the peak of their vitality, perfectly poised to make significant contributions. Qu Jiguang warmly encouraged the Group’s vast ranks of R&D personnel, noting that the Group’s R&D capabilities and institutional strength are rapidly advancing, and that the platform for innovative development is expanding by the day, thereby providing an even broader stage for young talents to showcase their abilities. He urged everyone to maintain a spirit of tireless dedication and an unwavering drive to forge ahead, to work diligently and strive relentlessly, and to endeavor to achieve new and greater victories and honors on the new journey of the new era, thus contributing the “Four Medicines” force to the city’s pioneering breakthroughs in the biopharmaceutical industry and to the creation of a hundred-billion-level industrial cluster.

The summary and commendation conference stirred the hearts of the vast majority of R&D personnel and provided them with profound inspiration. All attendees pledged to benchmark against leading peers, strive for world-class standards, and embrace a sense of urgency—knowing that we cannot afford to be complacent or slow—to compete for the top ranks, push ourselves harder under greater pressure, and ensure the timely achievement of all annual innovation goals and tasks. Together, we will make new contributions, deliver new achievements, and set new benchmarks in the Group’s high-quality, innovation-driven development!
