Stepping into the analytical laboratory of the Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Group Research Institute, one’s gaze immediately falls upon more than 100 high-performance liquid chromatographs neatly arranged and operating at full speed. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, researchers sit at rows of computer workstations, intently sorting through experimental data that is continuously streamed in.
“This January has gotten off to a strong start for our research and development efforts,” said Wang Lijiang, Executive Deputy Director of the Fourth Pharmaceutical Research Institute, as he inspected experiments in the liquid-phase laboratory. Last year, the institute secured approval for 88 new products—more than double the number from the previous year—and achieved cumulative regulatory review and approval for 72 drug varieties across 96 specifications, placing it among the industry leaders in terms of approved submissions. “To sustain this momentum and break through existing boundaries, we must continue to ramp up innovation in drug development, ensuring that generic and innovative drug R&D advance in tandem,” Wang Lijiang added.
A few days ago, SYN-045, the second Class I innovative drug developed by SinoPharm, received approval to commence clinical trials. Yang Xian, head of the Innovation Department at SinoPharm Research Institute, which is leading the development of this new drug, was conducting dissolution testing with her colleagues. She told reporters that SYN-045 is a novel therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension independently developed by SinoPharm and has attracted considerable attention since the start of its R&D; “We must accelerate progress on this project.”
Today, Siyao has nearly 200 new products in development, with high-end complex formulations, improved new drugs, and innovative drugs accounting for close to 30% of the pipeline. The company’s innovation capabilities are continuously strengthening, enabling it to undergo a remarkable transformation—from a business model dominated by a single injectable product to diversified growth across the entire pharmaceutical value chain.
The production workshop is also fully geared up, with everything pulled to the limit and every effort directed toward peak performance.
At Workshop 102 of Sihua Pharmaceutical in the High-tech Zone, rows of fully boxed products move smoothly along the conveyor belt, while intelligent robotic arms at the far end deftly and precisely place the blister packs into shipping cartons... The fully automated packaging line for oral formulations—currently producing felodipine sustained-release tablets—is operating at full capacity to meet surging market demand. “Felodipine is a winning bid product in the national centralized procurement program,” said Rong Yanyan, Deputy General Manager of the Sihua Manufacturing Center. “During the Spring Festival holiday, we resumed production three days ahead of schedule and are running at full throttle to ramp up output and satisfy market needs.”
“The whole year’s plan begins in spring—let’s shake off the doldrums and set out anew.” According to the group’s head, they will adopt a “start with a sprint” mindset, seize the favorable spring weather to make a fresh start, and go all out to achieve a strong opening performance in the first quarter of the Year of the Dragon.
