Following a spring rain, the Group’s R&D center is brimming with vitality and energy.
On the eve of International Labor Day, more than ten doctoral researchers gathered in the R&D Center conference room of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Group, joined by group leaders and heads of the R&D management team, for a unique symposium on doctoral research collaboration.
“Holding focused symposiums and exchanges for high-level talent is a first for the Group. Such forums serve not only to share progress on our work but also to foster mutual learning, strengthen personal bonds, and cultivate a more vibrant culture of research and innovation among our top-tier professionals. After all, both research and management require continuous innovation,” said Qu Jiguang, Chairman of the Group’s Board of Directors, in his concise and clear opening remarks.
Dr. Tong Qiaolin, the scientific leader of the Group’s API R&D team, took the floor first and shared his insights on API development in relation to the projects under his responsibility. “In our API development efforts, we have consistently adhered to the principle of upholding fundamentals while fostering innovation, with a strong emphasis on ‘three integrations’: integrating process innovation with market demand and production costs; aligning project development with the Group’s integrated ‘API-plus-formulation’ strategy; and aligning our initiatives with the industry’s broader trends toward high-end, intelligent, and green development.”
When developing a new product, Tong Qiaolin and his team designed a novel synthetic route and adopted a new catalytic system to replace expensive metal catalysts and ligands with more cost-competitive alternatives and commercially available ligands, achieving excellent experimental results. He believes that “innovation is not merely about pioneering an entirely new field; for applied research, effective process optimization built upon the innovations of predecessors is far more practical and meaningful.”
“Our future R&D vision is to develop active pharmaceutical ingredients with greater market potential and competitive advantage, more closely aligned with the needs of the industry chain, thereby making API development more practical and effective.” Dr. Tong Qiaolin’s remarks conveyed a profound sense of the researchers’ unwavering dedication and pragmatic approach.
“The fact that you have been able to integrate so quickly into the company and its research projects—successfully submitting an application for an API synthesis project and conducting pilot-scale trials for two projects—demonstrates your clear line of thinking and well-defined objectives,” said Qu Jiguang, expressing great appreciation for Dr. Xue Hong’s rapid integration into the company and her work over the past year and more. He expressed his hope that the API projects they are developing will soon become landmark achievements for both the company and the industry.
With the implementation of the Group’s “API + Formulation” development strategy, API research and development has emerged as a key highlight of the company’s growth. Currently, the Group’s API R&D team comprises eight doctoral researchers. Under their leadership, in less than three years the Group has secured approval for 53 API projects, has 33 projects under review, and is actively developing 40 new API candidates, placing it among the industry leaders in both the number of API applications submitted and those approved. Notably, the API for bupropion hydrochloride was the first in China to receive regulatory approval, while the yields of APIs such as moxifloxacin hydrochloride and stigmasterol have continued to improve…
The development of active pharmaceutical ingredients is being accelerated, and the Group’s innovative drug R&D is likewise forging ahead without pause. During the symposium, it was evident that, despite the diverse specialties and project portfolios of the PhDs involved, a culture of “learning from one another, striving to excel, supporting each other, and surpassing one another” has taken firm root within the R&D center.
“From zero to one”—the Group is forging ahead on the pioneering journey of innovative drug R&D.
“Currently, the innovative drug NP-01, which I am leading in R&D, is undergoing Phase I clinical trials; SYN-045 has already received approval for Phase I trials; we have filed eight new-drug patents; ADN-9 is conducting efficacy studies for an inhaled treatment of pulmonary fibrosis; QO-83 has completed efficacy validation and API process qualification; and overall, our innovative-drug research is progressing across the board,” Dr. Yang Xian said with confident assurance, speaking knowledgeably about the company’s innovative-drug development pipeline.
Today, artificial intelligence and gene-editing technologies are advancing at an unprecedented pace, with AI-driven virtual drug screening emerging as a new engine and a powerful impetus for the development of innovative medicines. “By introducing a high-performance computing cluster, we have established our own R&D system and platform for innovative drug discovery,” reported Dr. Li Yuan, head of the Group’s R&D Center’s AI Drug Virtual Platform. “We will accelerate the development of ultra-large-scale protein pre-training models based on deep learning, graph neural network–based target-prediction models, molecular-generation models, and high-throughput virtual-screening models for predicting the druggability of compounds, thereby enabling the precise design and development of small-molecule innovative drugs in the biopharmaceutical field and enhancing the quality and efficiency of innovative-drug research.”
“Improved new drugs are both a hot spot and a key focus—and also a significant challenge—in pharmaceutical innovation; therefore, we must place great emphasis on the R&D of Class 2 new drugs. Our generic drugs have already reached a nationally leading level. Moving forward, we must pursue innovative drugs with the same proactive approach and strive to achieve a leading position in this area as well. To do so, we need to leverage new technologies and identify breakthroughs in cutting-edge scientific fields.” The innovative drug research conducted by Drs. Yang Xian and Li Yuan has been fully endorsed by Group leaders such as Qu Jiguang, who have expressed high expectations for their work.
The encouragement and recognition received at work fill high-caliber talent with enthusiasm and further fuel their drive for innovation.
“High-caliber talent is a precious asset for enterprises and a vital force in upholding scientific and technological self-reliance and underpinning high-quality, innovation-driven development. Pursuing an independent path of talent cultivation is not only the right approach but also the ultimate goal. We must ensure that talent is retained through meaningful work, emotional connection, and competitive compensation, thereby fostering a robust culture that values, cherishes, and supports talent. It is essential to show genuine care and concern for talent—not only regarding the progress of research projects, but also in their personal lives and political engagement.” Qu Jiguang demonstrates deep concern for the personal growth of high-caliber talent and enthusiastically encourages them: “At present, the Group’s research and innovation are accelerating into a new phase of original, groundbreaking innovation. We must ‘think beyond’ the Group and embrace a broader, higher-level vision to elevate our corporate science and technology innovation to new heights. Everyone should strive to become a scientist, working tirelessly to achieve a win-win outcome for both the enterprise and individual development.”
A gentle spring breeze refreshes the heart and soul, while heartfelt care inspires and energizes. This reporting and exchange session has profoundly uplifted and encouraged high-level talent on the front lines of R&D, reinforcing their deep sense of the weighty mission and responsibility they bear.
“By pooling our wisdom and forging synergy, the spring of innovation will shine even more brightly.” This is the unanimous goal of us all.
With unwavering determination and steadfast commitment, a research team led by high-caliber talent is steering the group’s innovative development, setting sail for an even vaster frontier of innovation.
