On the first day of the Lunar New Year this year, Zhang Yongqin, who had returned to his hometown for the holiday, suddenly received an urgent dispatch request from Li Ligong, Manager of the Storage and Transportation Department at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
“There’s a shipment bound for Enshi, Hubei, today that needs to be loaded right away—hospitals are urgently in need. Master Zhang, could you take this run immediately? We’ll sort out the details once we get there,” Li Ligong said anxiously. After some deliberation, Zhang Yongqin finally agreed to Xiao Li’s request: “I know the epidemic situation in Wuhan is very serious, but this is truly an urgent matter. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have asked me to make this trip during the Chinese New Year.”
Ever since the first day of the Lunar New Year, Zhang Yongqin has been tirelessly shuttling back and forth along the logistics routes for transporting emergency supplies to frontline epidemic prevention and control efforts.
On February 3, truck driver Zhang Yongqin was busily loading his vehicle, preparing to deliver another shipment of medicines from Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical to aid Wuhan.
Li Ligong, Manager of the Storage and Transportation Department at Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical, double-checked the protective equipment provided to Zhang Yongqin and reiterated, “Please be sure to prioritize safety!”
Nine days ago, he persuaded Zhang Yongqin, his long-time partner, to deliver the first batch of medicines destined for Hubei to Enshi on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
“The front lines are in desperate need of medicines, so the rear is working overtime to ramp up production. It’s thanks to these brothers that we can get these life-saving supplies to the front lines,” Li Ligong said. “I believe that, just like the medical workers who volunteered to go straight into the fray, these drivers who travel thousands of miles and risk their safety to deliver supplies are also among the most beautiful ‘reverse-movers.’”
On January 25, the first day of the Lunar New Year, medical institutions and pharmaceutical distribution companies in Hubei Province requested emergency assistance from Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for critical medications such as moxifloxacin hydrochloride sodium chloride injection. All departments at the company worked in close coordination to ensure the timely dispatch of the urgently needed supplies.
At first, Li Ligong approached several logistics companies for partnerships, but as soon as the drivers heard about the job, they all backed out. “No sooner would a driver agree than his wife would call and say, ‘I’ve got elderly parents to care for and little kids at home—could you please not send him?’”
Old partner Zhang Yongqin stepped forward. Approaching 50, Zhang has been driving 9.6-meter trucks for many years. He said, “Even my children don’t want me to go. My two older brothers, on the other hand, keep saying: ‘If we don’t step up when trouble strikes, how can we possibly contain this pneumonia?’ My wife understands the bigger picture and doesn’t say much—she just keeps packing me buns, vegetables, and instant noodles. My only thought is simple: do everything in my power to get these life-saving supplies to the front lines and meet the needs of the epidemic-hit areas.”
Zhang Yongqin’s truck is headed to Enshi, Hubei Province, a one-way journey of nearly 1,500 kilometers from Shijiazhuang. Due to the driver’s extreme nervousness, he couldn’t even bring a co-driver along; with just one person in charge of the entire shipment, they stopped to rest every four hours, and Zhang Yongqin drove nonstop for a full day and night.
Also setting out at the same time as Zhang Yongqin was 43-year-old Yang Weibo, but his truck was headed straight for Wuhan. The two of them departed together, only to part ways in Henan and each head for their respective destinations.
Just before departure, Li Ligong provided them with comprehensive protective measures and repeatedly urged them: “Once you reach your destination, do not get out of the vehicle—stay put and remain inside at all times.”
Yet as Zhang Yongqin drove all the way, the highway to Hubei lay eerily empty before his eyes, leaving him with an uneasy feeling. When they stopped at a service area, the staff, upon learning that the truck was delivering medicine to Hubei, repeatedly expressed their gratitude. By the time they reached their destination, the receiving staff and volunteers sprang into action to unload the supplies—how could he possibly sit still any longer?
Although his medical checkup revealed no issues, Zhang Yongqin nevertheless voluntarily self-isolated upon returning. Inspired by his pioneering reverse-trip journey, the drivers around him also found the courage to follow suit. A batch of pharmaceuticals from Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical, destined for Hubei and other parts of the country, has been dispatched in succession.
On February 3, Zhang Yongqin set out once again. Destination: Wuhan.
