“Since the outbreak began, we have received successive requests from clinical medical institutions in Hubei, Jiangxi, Beijing, and other regions for additional supplies of abidor hydrochloride capsules,” said Han Shuqin, Deputy General Manager in charge of production at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., on February 5. She added that the oral dosage-form workshop’s abidor capsule production line is now operating around the clock in two shifts, with all employees working without leave to fully support the urgent demand for medications on the front lines of epidemic prevention and control. From mid-January 2020 to the present, Shijiazhuang Sihua has cumulatively shipped 1.36 million abidor hydrochloride capsules to Hubei Province, including 960,000 units destined for Wuhan.
In recent days, the oral dosage-form workshop at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has been operating at full capacity on the abidor hydrochloride capsule production line. Currently, daily output has reached 900,000 capsules, nearly doubling the usual level. With the gradual resumption of supply of the key raw material, abidor, production capacity for abidor capsules is expected to increase further, thereby easing the current tight supply situation in the market.
Sun Lijie, Director of the Shijiazhuang Fourth Pharmaceutical Research Institute, stated that Arbidol is primarily used to treat upper respiratory tract infections caused by influenza A and B viruses, among others. It works by inhibiting the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, thereby blocking the initial step of viral infection. In 2019, it was first included in the National Medical Insurance Catalogue and has since been repeatedly listed as a clinically recommended antiviral agent for influenza in the guidelines issued by the National Health Commission.
According to the Hebei Provincial Drug Administration, in response to epidemic prevention and control needs and given that Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.’s abidor hydrochloride capsules have experienced production constraints due to insufficient supply of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, the Administration convened a special meeting bringing together drug regulatory officials, drug registration personnel, technical review experts, and pharmaceutical testing specialists. The meeting aimed to help the company develop and implement solutions, with a dedicated member of the emergency approval team assigned to coordinate closely with the company. Meanwhile, the Chemical Drug Regulatory Division dispatched personnel directly to the enterprise to provide on-site technical assistance and guidance on relevant policies and regulations. On the afternoon of January 28, following receipt of the test report from the Hebei Provincial Institute for Drug Control, the Provincial Drug Administration promptly approved Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.’s application to add an additional API supplier. With this approval, the daily production capacity of abidor hydrochloride capsules at Shijiazhuang Sihua can now reach 1 million units, thereby effectively ensuring the supply of antiviral medications for clinical use.
