This has further strengthened our confidence in advancing research on this drug.” Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sun Lijie, Director of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and his team have intensified efforts in developing new drugs and conducting bioequivalence evaluations of antiviral agents for use on the front lines of epidemic prevention and control, thereby providing crucial support to the fight against the pandemic.
Dr. Sun Lijie, a provincial-level expert and holder of the Shijiazhuang City Talent Green Card Category A, who also serves as the Director of the Shisi Pharmaceutical Research Institute, stated that since the onset of the pandemic, the institute has promptly reviewed and adjusted its ongoing R&D projects, prioritizing those related to epidemic prevention and control. In addition, the institute has accelerated follow-up research on antiviral and antibiotic drugs such as arbidol hydrochloride and moxifloxacin hydrochloride, as well as conducted consistency evaluations for generic versions of these medications.
Sun Lijie explained that Arbidol hydrochloride capsules are an antiviral drug originally developed in the former Soviet Union. Shisi Pharmaceutical was among the first domestic pharmaceutical companies to develop and industrialize this product. Arbidol is primarily indicated for upper respiratory tract infections caused by influenza A and B viruses, among others, and works by inhibiting the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, thereby blocking the initial step of viral infection.
Currently, Shisi Pharmaceutical’s Arbidol Hydrochloride Capsules were first included in the National Medical Insurance Catalogue and the National Health Commission’s List of Clinically Recommended Antiviral Drugs for Influenza in 2019, and have been approved for inclusion in the epidemic prevention product reserve lists or green channels for epidemic-control medications in 24 provinces.
“During the Spring Festival, the Hebei Provincial Drug Administration swiftly approved the concurrent filing of Shisi Pharmaceutical Group’s self-produced abidor hydrochloride API and abidor hydrochloride capsules, further ensuring the supply of clinical antiviral medications.”
On this basis, Sun Lijie has also led his team in continuously developing a series of novel antiviral drugs and has already initiated projects to research new therapeutics targeting the novel coronavirus.
Since the outbreak began, Sun Lijie and the core R&D team have all reported for duty, diligently performing their responsibilities while rigorously adhering to personal protective measures. They work more than ten hours a day, racing against the clock to stay ahead of the virus.
