A twenty-jin sprayer clings tightly to his back, one hand supporting the hose filled with disinfectant while the other mechanically pumps the pressure lever again and again… Zhai Yafeng’s job demands patience and a strong sense of responsibility.

Zhai Yafeng, born in the 1990s, is a security officer in the Property Management Department of Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his colleagues have taken on the daily task of disinfecting more than 10,000 square meters of space in the administrative office area and employee dormitories.

Protective suits, white gloves, masks, and sprayers make up the full “gear” he wears on the job. For more than twenty days, Zhai Yafeng has been tirelessly on the move, shuttling between two fixed points: from his post to his dormitory. Aside from eating and sleeping, he spends every moment standing guard and spraying disinfectant.

“My current responsibility is to ensure the safety and health of our employees,” said Zhai Yafeng. Since January 24—the eve of the Lunar New Year—he and his colleagues have been carrying out daily, repetitive disinfection procedures. The factory’s office areas and employee dormitories are disinfected twice a day, with each session taking at least three hours.

Zhai Yafeng said that disinfecting with sprayers is no easy task: throughout the day, he has to carry a sprayer weighing more than 20 jin and make multiple round trips to refill it.

Working for long hours alongside disinfectant, even with a mask on, it’s hard to resist the penetration of the vaporized disinfectant; the smell often leaves his mouth and nose feeling dry and irritated. After a single shift, he loses all appetite.

Each time he removed his protective suit, his hair was already matted with sweat, and a humid, warm vapor rose from the top of his head.

His colleagues have taken note and kept it in mind: they know he is a “strong-willed” person who, once he sets his mind on something, will see it through to the end.

During the Spring Festival, he and his colleagues put aside their rest and took turns on duty to carry out disinfection. “Right now is the most critical period for epidemic prevention and control,” he said. “We must ensure that everyone can go to work in good health, so we simply cannot afford to delay the disinfection work.”

At present, we are in a critical phase of epidemic prevention and control. Every day, Zhai Yafeng and his colleagues don protective suits and masks, shoulder sprayers, and repeatedly disinfect the factory’s office areas and employee dormitories…
