On the morning of January 29—the first day of the Lunar New Year—Tang Xiaona, an analyst in the Innovative Formulations Department, headed to work early, even though her four-year-old child was still fast asleep. Known for her meticulous and well-organized approach, Tang coordinates all aspects of the institute’s innovation projects. “At present, we have three innovative drug projects underway, two of which are in preclinical development,” she explained. “Preparatory work must be done well in advance, and the day-to-day tasks need to be scheduled as early as possible.” She added, “Our research institute resumed operations very early this year. Since many employees live outside the city, numerous colleagues have come in early to stay on schedule.”
Innovative research is a painstaking undertaking. The exploration, optimization, validation, and confirmation of analytical methods constitute the core of Tang Xiaona’s work. “Each analytical method must be developed and optimized based on an extensive review of the literature, taking into account the characteristics of the compound and the dosage form; moreover, method optimization is an ongoing process that spans the entire research lifecycle, making the R&D journey exceptionally arduous.”

At night, the lights at the Shisiyao Pharmaceutical Research Institute often stay on until late. On the evening of February 20, just after 8 p.m., in the Small-Molecule Research Laboratory of the Innovative Active-Ingredient Division, analyst Zhang Yuling was making a final review of the day’s work. “I’ve been busy all day preparing experimental samples for the Pharmacology Department,” she said. Overtime has become routine for Zhang Yuling and her colleagues. “It’s just what the job demands—there are so many things that need to be pushed forward,” she added.
There are many others at the Shisi Pharmaceutical Research Institute who, like Zhang Yuling, work extremely hard.
Chen Wei and Zhang Yuling work in the same department; Zhang is also an expectant mother, with her due date in early May this year. On February 3, she returned to work on schedule. “There are certain tasks that I’m responsible for—there’s no way I can hold the team back,” she says. Although her movements may be a bit clumsy at times, she’s a true expert when it comes to analysis: efficient, decisive, and highly capable. On February 20, it was already 10 p.m., yet Sun Xiaofei, a process technician in the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Department of the Innovation Research Institute, was still poring over scientific literature. “We’re preparing pharmacological samples for this innovative drug, which has now entered the pilot-scale production phase, so we need to closely monitor and track every step of the preparation process.” The typical cycle for preparing these pharmacological samples is about 20 days, during which he doesn’t get to rest until the entire process is complete each day. “As a process technician,” Sun Xiaofei explained, “I have to be directly involved in every step myself—only then can I accurately master each stage of the synthesis.”
Overtime has become the norm at the Pharmaceutical Research Institute, and Sun Xiaofei is no exception. On weekdays, he makes it a habit to call home around 5 p.m. to check in on things. Sun has a four-year-old child, and normally his spouse picks the child up and drops them off. “But with the pandemic going on, we’ve had to leave the child in the care of the grandparents ever since.” Speaking about his family and child, he wears an expression of deep guilt: “I’m simply too busy with work to find time to spend with them. Thankfully, my family has gradually come to understand and support my career. I need to work hard and achieve some real results so I can repay both the company and my loved ones.”
Through arduous efforts, Shisi Pharmaceutical’s innovation journey is now on the right track. The company currently has more than 160 products in development, including several Class 1 new drugs—among them a novel small-molecule anti-cancer compound of Class 1 that was co-developed with domestic research institutions and is protected by proprietary intellectual property rights. This candidate recently received acceptance for review by the Center for Drug Evaluation of the National Medical Products Administration, and its patent has already been granted in China, the United States, and Europe, signaling that Shisi Pharmaceutical has officially sounded the call to enter the arena of national Class 1 new drugs.
At present, amid the ongoing pandemic, more than 310 R&D personnel across the institute are simultaneously prioritizing epidemic prevention and control while driving innovation, embracing a fresh new approach to spearhead a surge in the development of new products and technologies.
