“My mindset when I go out is completely different from before—I feel like I’m stepping out on a mission.”
“My mindset when I go out is completely different from before—I feel like I’m setting out on a mission,” says Jia Li, a driver with the company car fleet in the office of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Normally, he and his colleagues are primarily responsible for transporting visitors to and from the company; however, recently they have taken on another critical task: hauling urgently needed raw materials for production.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, market demand for the factory’s antimicrobial and antiviral pharmaceuticals has surged, yet the supply of raw materials has often been severely constrained. A few days ago, thanks to the tireless on-site presence and monitoring by the procurement team, progress was finally made in securing the necessary raw materials.
Although the raw-material supply issue has been temporarily resolved, promptly transporting hundreds of kilometers of raw materials back to the factory and getting them into production as quickly as possible remains a significant challenge, given the current shortages of logistics vehicles and soaring express-delivery costs.
Ultimately, the factory decided to place this heavy burden on the shoulders of the drivers in the vehicle fleet.
Jiali was the first driver to be ordered to set out on a mission. Driving long distances was no challenge for him, now in his fifties; he had undertaken countless such trips without ever faltering.
At 5 a.m. on February 23, as the sky was just beginning to lighten, he quickly gulped down two mouthfuls of breakfast, grabbed a thermos and some instant noodles, and hurried out the door.
“This is my first long-distance trip since the Spring Festival, and I’m not even sure what the conditions are like on the highway. All the way here, I’ve only spotted a few big trucks here and there, and most of the service areas are shut down—there’s not even a place to get hot water. For lunch, I just had to make do with some instant noodles. But hey, I used to be in the military; none of this is really that tough,” Master Jia said with a smile.
What should you do when you’re tired? “If you feel tired, pull over at a service area and take a few minutes to rest.” What if you get drowsy? “I’ve got a ‘secret trick’: drink some strong coffee—it really wakes you up.”
“The epidemic is an order, and time is life. ‘Every extra minute on the road means a minute’s delay in receiving the goods—and a minute’s delay in producing life-saving medicines. Lives are at stake; we simply cannot afford to waste a single moment!’” Master Jia understands this all too well. From the moment he steps out of his door each morning, he dares not linger for a single instant, speeding all the way.
At noon, he finally arrived at his destination. With no time to rest, he and the factory staff quickly loaded the truck and then immediately headed back. “Actually, hauling just one or two hundred kilograms of raw materials isn’t heavy—but in my heart, it feels incredibly weighty.”
After traveling over a thousand kilometers round trip in a single day, by the time we returned to the factory, disinfected the vehicles, and completed the material handover procedures, it was already past 11 p.m.
The next day, when his colleagues saw him, they all exclaimed in unison: “Master Jia, that was unbelievably fast!”
In response to his colleagues’ praise, Jia Li said that, in addition to being an ordinary driver, he is also, like the workshop staff, a guardian and a “reverse traveler” on the lifeline.
……
A day later, Master Shan Qingshan of the minivan team set out once again, bearing a solemn mission, ...
In this war against the epidemic fought without gunfire,
We need both warriors who charge into the fray,
We also need militia who are brave enough to support the front lines.
Let us pay tribute to every guardian and hero who marches against the tide on the front lines of life.
—A tribute!
