This year’s International Women’s Day on March 8 is a day of struggle for female workers who are fighting on the front lines of epidemic prevention and control and production.
They were once the obedient and adorable daughters in their parents’ eyes, the gentle and virtuous wives in their husbands’ eyes, and the kind and approachable mothers in their children’s eyes—ordinary people just like us. In the battle to contain and control COVID-19, they donned work uniforms as battle gear, fearlessly fighting on the front lines of production, giving their all day and night without rest, and demonstrating a sense of responsibility and commitment that truly proves “women are every bit as capable as men.” On the front lines of epidemic prevention and production, they left behind their most beautiful selves. This spring, the “flowers of spring in the fight against the epidemic” have blossomed with irresistible charm amid the cold winds.
Even a gentle shoulder can bear great responsibility.
Rong Yanyan is the director of the Oral Preparations Workshop at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. On New Year’s Eve, she immediately reported for duty, briefly settled her young child at home, and hurried to the factory, becoming one of the first “going-against-the-flow” employees at Shijiazhuang Sihua. She remained on the front lines for a full month and a half.
After more than forty days of relentless work, Rong Yanyan can no longer recall the specifics of the moment she volunteered for duty, but the conviction—“If war breaks out, I will answer the call and surely prevail”—has taken firm root in her heart.

Even with delicate shoulders, she shoulders heavy responsibilities—women are in no way inferior to men. The oral dosage-form workshop where she works is tasked with producing antiviral reserve supplies, including abidor hydrochloride capsules and disinfectants, in response to the pandemic. Faced with one challenge after another as production resumed following the Spring Festival, she put her mind to work to find solutions; when necessary, she coordinated resources across the enterprise to overcome obstacles. Under her slender yet resilient frame, one problem after another was solved, one hurdle after another was cleared: the abidor capsule line was successfully upgraded and integrated, boosting efficiency by 20%, and the disinfectant production line, empowered by technological innovation, abandoned the “manpower-intensive” approach, resulting in a substantial increase in capacity.
“The Arbidol capsules and disinfectants produced here have been continuously dispatched to the front lines of epidemic prevention and control. Hearing that patients in Wuhan are now using the medicines we produce—and knowing that we are contributing, however modestly, to supporting Wuhan and the entire nation—fills me with a profound sense of responsibility and mission as a pharmaceutical professional.”
Within her relatively small area of responsibility, she logs more than 30,000 steps each day, her hurried pace a testament to her relentless busyness and hard work. Like Rong Yanyan, workshop deputy directors Tian Lili and Yang Junhong also remain steadfast on the front lines around the clock.
On International Women’s Day, when asked what her wish was, she replied: “I am a Party member—persevere, persevere, and persevere again, until the moment we achieve victory over the epidemic!”
There is always a kind of dedication by women that warms others.
Han Huijuan, the packaging team leader in the oral dosage-form workshop, is a second-time expectant mother who has also been working tirelessly alongside her colleagues for more than a month.
There she was, clad in a clean suit and with a round belly, standing by the automatic capsule-filling machine, operating the control panel, verifying process parameters, and checking for variations in capsule fill weights. Since New Year’s Eve, this has been her daily routine. By the end of the day, her back ached and her legs were sore, even swollen in places, yet she never once complained. “If I can do something for Wuhan—and for Hubei—it’s worth every bit of the effort,” she said.

On New Year’s Eve, Han Huijuan, six months pregnant, had just returned home for the holiday to reunite with her family when she suddenly received a call from the workshop announcing the resumption of production: “The COVID-19 situation in Hubei is extremely severe, and we urgently need to mobilize arbidol. The factory has instructed us to get the production line up and running as quickly as possible. Please inform everyone to overcome the difficulties and return to work as soon as possible!”
Liu Hailiang, also an employee of Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical, drove her to the factory early in the morning. Along the way, as she gazed at the deserted streets, she felt a heavy knot in her heart. As soon as she arrived at the workshop, despite her physical limitations, she swiftly changed into her work uniform. “Stepping up production is tantamount to fighting the disease and racing against death—we simply can’t afford to slow down,” she said.
“Guaranteeing production is our responsibility. With three-shift operations, personnel rotate while the equipment runs continuously at full capacity, resulting in a more than doubling of daily output compared with normal days.” Since the onset of the pandemic, the oral dosage-form workshop at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical has become the busiest unit in the plant, with all 150 employees on duty—most of them women—and not a single one having dropped out.
On February 27, the factory organized a donation drive among Party members and employees. Han Huijuan, with a heart full of compassion, and her spouse generously contributed, saying, “Medical workers risk their lives to save patients—some are even willing to lay down their own lives in the line of duty. What is a small donation compared to that?”
On International Women’s Day, Han Huijuan expressed a heartfelt wish: “I hope the pandemic will pass soon and life will return to peace and tranquility.”
Bravely step up and take the lead
A ferocious wave of the novel coronavirus swept through Wuhan and then across the entire country. On January 24, Han Shuqin, the deputy general manager in charge of production at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical, who was at the hospital caring for her ailing mother, received an urgent call from the factory demanding that production be resumed.
“The epidemic is a command.” Having weathered previous public-health crises such as SARS and H1N1, Han Shuqin deeply understands the critical importance of emergency preparedness and response. With tears in her eyes, she immediately bid farewell to her elderly mother, carrying the deep sense of guilt for being unable to care for her at her bedside, and rushed to the factory to take up her duties in command and coordination. When rallying employees to return to work, she spoke with unwavering resolve and heartfelt emotion, inspiring every member of the Fourth Pharmaceutical Company: “Now is the time when our country needs us most—Fourth Pharmaceutical employees must not fall behind or bring shame upon ourselves.”

On New Year’s Eve—the time for family reunions—the oral dosage-form workshop at Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical was brightly lit, as she, despite the lingering aftereffects of surgery, worked through the night on site, directing and coordinating operations.
True effort is never in vain: thanks to her tireless dedication, the production lines for arbidol hydrochloride capsules and disinfectants were swiftly brought back online, providing a steady stream of “supplies” and “ammunition” to help secure victory in the battle against the epidemic.
Faced with rapidly growing demand, raw and auxiliary materials were frequently in short supply, at one point severely constraining production. “Everything else can be put on hold, but during the most critical phase of the epidemic, we must never stop ensuring the health needs of the people! Every additional tablet produced provides an extra layer of protection for public health and bolsters societal confidence,” she said. Despite the challenges, she spared no effort to mobilize every available resource to support production. “Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical has so far dispatched a total of 3.962 million Abidor capsules to Hubei Province, demonstrating outstanding performance in production assurance,” she noted. Recently, the provincial and municipal authorities responsible for securing epidemic-control supplies commended Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical for its exceptional efforts in this regard.
Who among us does not carry deep concern in our hearts? It is precisely because we harbor an even deeper, more profound love that we resolutely choose to brave every storm and hardship, standing as the most tender yet most steadfast bastion on the front lines of pandemic response and production.
After more than 40 days of steadfast dedication, on International Women’s Day, Han Shuqin’s heart was filled with concern not only for the company’s production but also for her elderly mother.
Documenting the Commitment and Steadfastness of Pharmaceutical Professionals
Since the outbreak, production workshops have become the main front in epidemic prevention and control. On this front line, wherever there is a shining example, she rushes to it—whether it’s a Communist Party member who has steadfastly held the line on the “epidemic” front, an ordinary female worker with boundless compassion, or a dedicated resident inspector who dares to take responsibility—all have become the “stars” of her reporting.
Wu Yuqing is a publicity officer in the Party and Mass Work Department of Shijiazhuang No. 4 Pharmaceutical, recently appointed to her post. Lately, she has been tirelessly traveling throughout the company’s workshops, warehouses, vehicle fleet, and subsidiary enterprises, ensuring that she is always up to date with first-hand information on the company’s epidemic prevention and control efforts.
Early on January 25, she received the assignment to report on the factory’s urgent dispatch of medicines to pharmaceutical distributors and hospitals in Wuhan and Enshi, Hubei Province. She keenly recognized the gravity of her responsibility.
Grabbing a pen, a notebook, and a camera, I threw on my coat and mask and hurried to the factory. Just then, my phone began flooding with alerts: 25 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country had activated Level-I responses to major public health emergencies, leaving me deeply anxious.
“We must publicize the company’s positive response so that the public knows what pharmaceutical companies are doing!” she thought, as she took photos and gathered information.
Back home, I didn’t even have time to eat; I fired up the computer, and ideas flowed freely. In one swift stroke, I penned the news piece “Shisi Pharmaceutical Sends 100,000 Bags of Antibacterial Intravenous Solutions to Hubei” and promptly submitted it to the province’s major media outlets.
“You moved quickly—Sijiaoyao was the first pharmaceutical company in Shijiazhuang, and indeed in Hebei Province, to rush to Hubei’s aid. The draft has been approved; it will appear in tomorrow’s edition and be simultaneously published on both the print and digital platforms.” That evening, a phone call from an editor at the provincial newspaper filled her with immense excitement.
Starting on January 25, she and her colleagues entered full combat mode. They conducted on-site interviews, edited articles, produced videos, and uploaded photos—activities that have continued to this day. To date, they have collectively reported and written nearly 200 articles and photo features on various aspects of the epidemic response, using their dedication, pen, and camera to share with the public the heartwarming stories unfolding at Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical during the fight against the pandemic. Many of these pieces have been widely shared or reprinted by media outlets at all levels, new-media platforms, and the “Strong Country” account, generating significant impact both within the company and in the broader community.
