On the morning of February 27, in the hematopoietic stem cell collection room of the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University, a post-2000s young man successfully donated 395 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension after more than five hours of collection. These “seeds of life,” destined for recipients far away, carry with them profound love and the hope of renewed vitality. The young donor is Lü Xiaolong, an employee of the Warehousing Services Department at Hebei Guangxiang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., part of Shijiazhuang Sihua Pharmaceutical Group. He is also the second employee from this group to successfully donate hematopoietic stem cells.
Lü Xiaolong, 21, is diligent, down-to-earth, and not one to talk much—yet he has a warm and caring heart. In recent years, he has volunteered to donate blood every year without compensation. During a blood donation in 2019, he first learned about hematopoietic stem cell donation and had a sample collected to join the Chinese Marrow Donor Program. “I remember that day,” he said, “when the medical staff told me that if we donated a bit more blood, we could have a sample stored in the program and potentially save the life of a leukemia patient. I thought that was an incredibly meaningful thing to do, so I volunteered to have my sample collected and filled out the application form.” His simple words could hardly conceal the kindness and sincerity deep in his heart.
Although he initially joined the registry out of curiosity, when the actual decision of whether to donate or not arose, he remained true to his original intention. Last December, Red Cross staff contacted Mr. Lü to inform him that he had been a successful match for a patient with a blood disorder and asked if he was willing to donate hematopoietic stem cells. Without the slightest hesitation, he responded with both seriousness and firmness that he agreed. He said, “I didn’t think too much about it—I just wanted to help others and do something good. The thought that I could save a life simply by giving a little of my own blood, and that it wouldn’t harm my body in any way, made it an obligation I couldn’t possibly refuse.”
After making the firm decision to donate, Lü Xiaolong began making adjustments to his diet. “I used to love drinking sugary beverages—almost every meal included one. But for this donation, I’m now drinking more water and fewer drinks,” Lü Xiaolong said with a smile. From the moment he received the call, he deliberately reorganized his daily routine, gave up sugary drinks, and increased his physical exercise, all in order to be in peak health and full energy when it came time to donate hematopoietic stem cells.
As for this donation, he chose to keep it a secret from his family. “My parents would definitely worry if they found out, so I’m not telling them just yet,” Lü Xiaolong said with a smile. “I’ll explain everything properly when I get home—they’ll surely understand my thoughts and actions.”
The night before the donation, Lü Xiaolong was thrilled and woke up just after 3 a.m. “After four days of mobilization injections, I can finally donate hematopoietic stem cells to save someone’s life,” Lü Xiaolong said.
On the day he donated hematopoietic stem cells, Lü Xiaolong received a letter of gratitude from the family of the recipient. The letter read: “For our entire family, falling ill is an unfortunate ordeal; yet to have encountered you in this vast sea of humanity and to have received your compassionate assistance is truly a blessing beyond measure! Your selflessness and boundless love have given our family the strength and unwavering faith to continue fighting this disease!”
After successfully donating hematopoietic stem cell suspension, Lü Xiaolong said, “I hope the recipient’s surgery is successful and that they recover their health as soon as possible.”
“Donating hematopoietic stem cells does not harm one’s health. I hope more people will learn about the Chinese Marrow Donor Program and contribute their own bit of kindness.” Recently, Mr. Lü, who has since been discharged from the hospital and returned to work, expressed his deep gratitude for the thoughtful care he received from his employer and pledged that, should a similar opportunity arise in the future, he would remain true to his original commitment.
